Welcome to Collectors Playing Cards
BROWSE the catalogue Ask a QUESTION about cards If you have items to SELL, click here There are 20 pages with more than 300 items arranged in categories. Everything is fully described and illustrated, most with thumbnails as well. More items from my playing card collection are added every week. PLEASE NOTE: I will be on holiday from Sat 3rd Sept to Sun 12th Sept and not able to answer any queries or deal with any orders during that week. I have had email problems recently and cannot access any addresses or recent emails. If you are awaiting a reply please re-send the question. BBC Home and Antiques: You may have found my website after reading the 'Antiques surgery' on p133 in the current issue (October, on sale now) for which I was asked to supply illustrations for the playing card query. If so, GREETINGS! What a difficult question... Where Mr Wildblood got the idea for Egyptian Mamelukes or Islamic polo sticks I cannot imagine, but he is quite right about the 1370s and the Rouen pattern being the basis for the English court designs. The fact is that nobody knows how playing cards began in Europe. All theories are pure speculation, some more plausible than others, and many of them fanciful nonsense as there is little secure historical evidence. It's part of the fascination of the subject. Be aware that if you begin to get interested by looking at the vast array of different types of cards (on this website for example which only scratches the surface) you are likely either to begin a new collecting hobby or to start searching a suitable present for someone. Bon voyage! ..Site updated 01 September 2010.. To purchase: e-mail your name, postal address and the item number. Pay securely online with PayPal for immediate dispatch.
